Kyren Williams is an exciting addition to the Rams. The running back, drafted as the 164th overall pick in the 2022 draft, should be a good fit for the team.
Coaches are ecstatic to see him get onto the field and play. However, that might take a little while since he broke his foot during minicamp. The first-year back, expected to return during training camp, could carve out a role for himself in the offense.
“He (Williams) got surgery,” coach Sean McVay said in a post-practice interview. “Everything went really well, and we expect him to be back at some point in the earlier parts of training camp.”
The rookie could receive playing time this season despite the ailment. As a rookie, that is all Williams could hope for as he enters a crowded running back room.
Where Kyren Williams could find an opening

However, the group could condense soon. Darrell Henderson’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season. If the Rams let the running back walk in free agency, the door opens more for Williams.
Although the door is still open for him as a rookie since Cam Akers is coming off a torn Achilles. Akers claimed to be healthy, but time will tell if he is 100%. The outlook for a running back returning to form from that big of an injury is bleak. However, no one thought he would return last season, yet he did.
Henderson has been unable to stay healthy too. He has missed nine games in his short career.
“Henderson is in a contract season, but is also recovering from injury and has dealt with a variety of injuries over the past few seasons,” Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reported.
The Rams will be content to let Henderson walk in free agency if Rodrigue’s sense of the situation is correct. She wrote that a Williams take over of Henderson’s role in the offense is eventual.
When this happens is anyone’s guess, but it makes sense. Henderson is a great back, but the Rams could accumulate draft capital in the form of a compensatory pick if the team allowed him to leave.
If Akers is healthy and proves it this season, the Rams don’t need to have three talented running backs on the roster. In turn, Williams could have himself an expanded role as a sophomore.
However, as a rookie, Williams likely sees some snaps here and there, but nothing consistent. Unless the injury bug bit the running back room again.
