Kyle Whittingham Not Retired After 22-Year Career with Utah Utes

The Utah Utes are going to be having someone other than Kyle Whittingham calling the shots for the Utah Utes going forward. The program is going to head into the Las Vegas Bowl against the Nebraska Cornhuskers on New Year’s Eve, but the team is going to be feeling different. Whittingham is coaching the bowl game, but he has not discussed his future until now. Let’s take a deeper dive into his comments about his future.

Kyle Whittingham Discusses Future After Stepping Down

As one of the longest-tenured HC’s in CFB, Kyle Whittingham looks to keep having fun in Utes County.

While talking with the media on Thursday, former Utah Utes coach Kyle Whittingham was asked about his future and returning to coaching.

“Who knows? We’ll see, I guess, stepping down, stepping away and reevaluate things and see where we’re at. I’m a free agent, I’m in the transfer portal. Like I said, I’m at peace and I did not want to be that guy that overstayed his welcome with people just saying, ‘Hey, when’s this guy gonna leave?’ That was not my intention, ever. I hope I didn’t do that. I’m sure with some people I did do that, but, the time to me, the timing is right.”

Whittingham has been the coach of the Utes since being the co-coach of the program in the 2024 Fiesta Bowl. He holds a 177-88 record, including an 11-6 record in bowl games. However, he stepped down earlier this month.

“I don’t know if it’s ever out of your system. I mean, it’s in your blood. I don’t know about that. That being said, I’m not sure what I’m going to do, but when you got coaching in your blood, it just doesn’t go away.”

It is going to be interesting to see if Whittingham stays out of coaching or if he will sign with a program heading into the 2026 season.
