“It’s Not What You Think!” Kirk Herbstreit Caught On Hot Mic During UNC-TCU Contest, Fans Lost For Words

Kirk Herbstreit is one of the more well known names in college football.  Herbstreit has been with ESPN since 1995.  This followed his four year stint as the quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes.  However, something he said in 2025 had fans wondering if a veteran broadcaster really made that mistake.

During the UNC-TCU game, Kirk Herbstreit was caught on hot mic, and fans were left speechless

According to sports reporter David Scott:

BILL Belichick’s college football debut went about as bad as it could possibly go.

North Carolina gave up 48 points in the loss, the most that Belichick has ever conceded in a game.

The game was such a blowout that ESPN was focusing more on Kirk Herbstreit’s dog Peter than the product on the field at certain times.

At one point, it also appeared that Herbstreit was caught on a hot mic giving an honest review of Belichick’s Tarheels.

After a fourth quarter commercial break, Herbstreit was heard laughing and saying something that sounded like “they’re bad.”

The moment immediately went viral and caused many to conclude that Herbstreit thought that North Carolina was a bad team.

However, Herbstreit got on social media immediately after the game to clear the air.

He said he was speaking to his spotter during the break, not commenting on the game.

“Said ‘you’re bad’ to my spotter Deron for something he said as we were coming back on air,” Herbstreit said.

“Manipulation at its finest!”

Herbstreit doubled down on his statement in a separate post as it continued to go viral.

“Must be a slow night… not sure why this is so confusing,” he said.

“I said ‘YOU’RE bad’ to my spotter Deron for something funny he said when we were just coming back on air.”

Herbstreit was clearly irked by his statement being misconstrued, and continued his rant on social media with a third post.

“Instead of making up things I said how bout giving Rece, Holly, and I some love for getting through that game,” he said.

“Those games are by far the toughest games you announcers have to call.”

Many fans came to the defense of Herbstreit on social media, sharing that they believed his story.

He clearly said ‘You’re bad’ not ‘They’re bad,'” one fan said.

“I mean in his defense, they were bad,” another fan said.

“Even if you did say they’re bad it wouldn’t had been a lie either,” a third fan said.

“We hear it Kirk. Don’t let them hate. They’ll do anything for clicks,” a fourth fan said.

“You don’t have to explain yourself, Kirk,” a fifth fan said.
