New England Patriots Quarterback Controversy
The Patriots are currently 2-8 and have the worst record in the AFC Conference, and also have been dealing with issues regarding their starting quarterback. The team has stated that Bailey Zappe will be the starter moving forward this season, making Jones the backup. Two ESPN writers think that there is a possibility that the organization could sign Cousins in free agency this offseason, and could save the team from their recent struggles.
Writer Matt Miller stated, “The Patriots will have options. They might have a top-five selection, and if Caleb Williams or Drake Maye are on the board, it’s an easy decision to reset at quarterback. But they could also look to free agency [Kirk Cousins] or even the trade market [Kyler Murray].”
How Kirk Cousins Could Save The Patriots
When first presented with the idea of signing Cousins, it seems a little bit far-fetched, since the quarterback is coming towards the end of his career. He is dealing with a torn Achilles at 36 years old, and may not play at the level we are used to seeing him at. However, if he can recover well, he could be a great addition to the team, as Cousins was in the midst of his best career season.
The team would likely have to give up some valuable assets to obtain the veteran quarterback. Still, it might be worth it if head coach Bill Belichick sticks with the team, as he was the mastermind who helped Tom Brady become one of if not the greatest quarterbacks of all time. With Cousins’ talent, Belichick would almost certainly make him a better player. Although it seems like a long shot, this move could potentially help New England get back towards the top of the AFC.
