Kevin Stefanski DROPS BOMBSHELL On Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel After Falcons Move

The Atlanta Falcons closed their 2025 season with an 8-9 record, missing the playoffs despite a gutsy 19-17 victory over the New Orleans Saints on January 4. Just twelve days later, the franchise hired Kevin Stefanski as head coach after he was fired by Cleveland following a difficult 5-12 campaign. The Browns’ messy quarterback situation defined Stefanski’s final season, with Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders all taking turns under center. Many wondered if frustration lingered from that chaotic year.

But during his January 30 appearance on the Dan Patrick Show, Stefanski revealed genuine feelings about those two rookies that might surprise fans expecting bitterness.

What Kevin Stefanski Really Said

Stefanski spoke warmly about his experience coaching Sanders and Gabriel despite Cleveland’s struggles. Gabriel started six games before suffering a concussion, finishing with a 1-5 record. Sanders then took over for the final seven starts, going 3-4 while throwing seven touchdowns against ten interceptions. Despite the tough results and his subsequent firing, Stefanski expressed only respect.

“I love those guys. I loved coaching them,” Stefanski stated emphatically during the interview. He highlighted their growth throughout the challenging season, noting both made significant strides despite the dysfunction around them. “Both those guys can point to their rookie seasons and say, ‘Man, they got better in these areas.’ I think very highly of those two young men.”

The new Falcons coach emphasized his passion for developing quarterbacks. “Developing young quarterbacks is something we want to be at the forefront of,” he explained. “Love those two young guys, and they’ll continue to improve.” Rather than dwelling on whether the constant rotation hurt the rookies’ development, Stefanski kept his comments forward-looking and supportive.

His positive stance reveals no hidden grudges, only pride in their progress. This approach will shape how he handles the Falcons’ quarterback future guiding Penix Jr. through ACL rehabilitation while the team prepares to release veteran Kirk Cousins.

Now Stefanski turns his full attention to building a winner, where developing young signal-callers will clearly drive his vision.

What This Means for Atlanta Falcons’ Future

The new head coach faces the challenge of ending a playoff drought stretching back to 2017. The Falcons 2026 schedule presents significant tests, six divisional battles against Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers will determine the team’s fate in the competitive NFC South. But Stefanski brings NFL experience and a commitment to nurturing talent that the franchise hopes will benefit their rookie passer.

Penix Jr. is recovering from ACL surgery with an uncertain Week 1 return, making the patient, development-focused approach essential. If the Coach is successful in guiding him back to form, the Falcons have a legitimate shot at competing for a division title and ending their eight-year postseason absence.
