The Kentucky football program underperformed tremendously throughout the 2024 season. The Wildcats were predicted to finish 11th in the SEC before the start of the season; they ended up finishing 1-7 in the conference, which earned them the second-to-last spot in the standings. After losing a massive rivalry game and having a nightmare of a season overall, Kentucky’s two most productive receivers are looking for a new school.
The Cats struggled to generate any type of offensive rhythm the entire year; these hardships will likely continue with the loss of two of their most targeted receivers. Wildcat stars Dane Key and Barion Brown have both announced their decisions to enter the transfer portal. The quarterback position was already a major issue for this program, and it seems that things just got a lot more difficult for their offense collectively.
Kentucky’s Key
The loss of Dane Key hurts the hearts of UK fans significantly more than other transfers. Key was born and raised in Lexington; he dreamed of playing for his hometown college like his father, Donte, did in the early ’90s. He was Kentucky’s number-one receiver this season, racking up 47 catches for a total of 715 yards. It must be difficult for fans to see a player leave his dream school and hometown after years of calling Lexington home. Considering his background, this decision is starting to worry Cats fans about the future of their program.
Barion gone
Another major loss for the UK happens to be right behind Dane Key in terms of production. Barion Brown announced his entrance into the portal shortly after Key; he was an elusive deep threat who added versatility to Kentucky’s offense over the last three years. The Cats also lose a terrific return man in Barion; he has returned many kickoffs for touchdowns during his tenure in Lexington. He will likely be picked up by a more competitive SEC school to finish his college career.
Future of UK
The current state of Kentucky football is hectic, to say the least. Many variables are contributing to the outlook for 2025 already. Head coach Mark Stoops has tried to reassure UK fans by saying, “Nobody panic”. He declares his confidence in himself and his staff by stating, “We’re going to have a better football team”. Kentucky has the 29th-ranked recruiting class in the country for 2025 heading into the early signing period. If they grab a couple of transfers from the portal, Coach Stoops’s claims might carry some weight.
