Kent State Golden Flashes Snap Longest FBS Losing Streak to Open 2025 Season

The Kent State Golden Flashes are looking to take a step forward as a program as they have not had too much success recently. After the team went winless last season, people began to wonder when the next win was going to appear. They entered the 2025 college football season with the longest losing streak in the FBS with 21 and took on the Merrimack Warriors in Week 1.

Let’s take a closer look at what the Kent State Golden Flashes did to open the season.

The Kent State Golden Flashes entered Week 1 doing something they were not able to do last season: win a game. They were able to do so as they hosted the FCS Merrimack Warriors and secured a 21-17 victory to improve to 1-0. This victory snapped an FBS-worst 21-game losing streak as the next-highest was 11.

The program was facing an uphill battle before even stepping on the field as coach Kenni Burns was fired in mid-April for multiple violations of his contract. This made Mark Carney the interim coach, and he has gotten off on the right foot with a victory in his first game. He has climbed the ranks as this is the third season he has been with the program and was the team’s offensive coordinator in 2024.

Next week is going to be a lot more difficult as the Kent State Golden Flashes are on the road against the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Week 2. However, it is time for the program to celebrate after its first win on the gridiron in over 700 days.
