Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been to the last five of six Super Bowls in from the AFC Conference. They have won three Super Bowl titles in the NFL in that span.

During the 2024 season, Kansas City had a 15-2 record. They won a lot of one-possession games, and many people felt like Mahomes, and the Chiefs kept getting “lucky.” Well, the Chiefs lost in Super Bowl LIX to the Philadelphia Eagles. Could his supporting cast be the reason why Kansas City does not reach the Super Bowl in the 2025 season? It remains to be seen what will transpire.

NFL Coordinator Gets Harsh About Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes Supporting Cast

It is not a surprise that Mahomes is the number one ranked quarterback in the NFL entering the 2025 season, after different coaches, scouts, and executives talked to espn.com Jeremy Fowler. With him being ranked number one, people across the league that Mahomes does not have the same supporting cast as he once did. One veteran NFL coordinator said about his supporting cast,

“OL in decline, particularly at tackle, WR group completely cleaned out by injury, [Travis] Kelce not near the same player. I thought he had more command of time/score/situation and better fundamentals from within the pocket than ever. He’s a one-man army. And no NFL coach wants to deal with him. Complete dawg. No one like him. Maybe [Joe] Burrow, but Burrow isn’t as dangerous as a player.”

Kelce did not have the same juice during the 2024 season, and he showed major signs of decline during the playoffs, especially the Super Bowl. Many thought that he was going to retire after the season and spend more time with his girlfriend, Taylor Swift, but Kelce decided to come back for another season. Speaking of the Super Bowl, the Chiefs offensive line did not do a good job of protecting Mahomes well.

During the 2024 season, Mahomes completed 67.5% of his passes for 3,928 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He also rushed for 307 yards on 58 carries and two touchdowns, along with averaging 5.3 yards per rush. Mahomes has was ranked seventh in passing yardage in 2024 and was ranked ninth in passing touchdowns.

At 29 years old, he remains one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. The thing is, how much longer will he still be at the top of his game? Will his supporting cast be an issue for Kansas City in 2025 and could it be a reason why they won’t be around 15-2 once again? The AFC West could be the best division in the NFL and Mahomes will need to be near the top of his game if they want to win the division once again.
