The New York Giants quarterback room in 2025 should look a lot better than it did in 2024. Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, Jaxson Dart, and Tommy DeVito for now are the quarterbacks on the roster.

DeVito is the most likely player to be cut and not make the 53-man roster. With that being the case, Wilson is in line to be the starter, Winston is projected to be the backup, and Dart is projected to be the third quarterback on the depth chart. Dart is a rookie, and he was the 25th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft from the Ole Miss Rebels. General manager Joe Schoen traded up for him with the Houston Texans from the 34th pick in the second-round. The Giants plan on Dart sitting for a part of the 2025 season, but it will also be interesting to see how he will look during training camp.
New York Giants Insider Reveal Potential Plans For Rookie Quarterback Jaxson Dart Entering the 2025 NFL Season

Dan Duggan of The Athletic talked about what transpired during mandatory minicamp for the Giants. He kept a close eye on rookies Abdul Carter and Dart. Duggan talked about the Giants quarterback pecking order and there was some interesting information revealed about it. He said,
“Interestingly, Dart took more second-team reps than Jameis Winston in team periods during the spring. It remains to be seen whether the practice reps will indicate who the No. 2 quarterback will be on game day.
Getting Dart many quality practice reps is a priority, but Daboll doesn’t want to limit Wilson’s time with the starters. So it makes sense for Winston to sacrifice practice reps as the backup.
A big part of Winston’s appeal as a backup is that he has started 87 games in 10 seasons. That experience should enable him to be ready as the No. 2 quarterback even if his practice reps are reduced.
Keeping Dart as the emergency third quarterback, at least early in the season, would seem to fit with the Giants’ long-term development plan.”
Is there a chance that Dart is getting more number two reps than Winston to see if Dart can win the backup job over Winston or does it mean that Winston is safe, and Dart will be third string to start season no matter what? One of the reasons why New York signed both Wilson and Winston were both signed so they can be one and two on depth chart and let the rookie sit and develop.
It would be a shock to see Dart start right away for New York. When Week 1 rolls around against the Washington Commanders, it would not be a surprise to see Dart as the inactive quarterback and let him work behind the scenes. The Giants would love for him to sit the entire 2025 season and start in Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season, but those plans could potentially change depending on how things go for head coach Brian Daboll and company.
