Kareem Jackson, the 35 year old veteran Denver Broncos safety, was issued a four game suspension on Monday after an illegal, head-to-head contact hit on Minnesota Vikings quarterback, Joshua Dobbs.
In fact, the game against the Vikings was Jackson’s first since his prior suspension from a similar hit committed in the Broncos’ win earlier in the season against the Green Bay Packers. Now, Jackson and the Broncos have chosen to appeal the length of the suspension, and the jointly chosen – by the NFL and NFLPA – arbitration official, Derrick Brooks, has come to a decision.

Why Is Kareem Jackson’s Suspension So Long?
As mentioned earlier, this is not Kareem Jackson’s first rodeo. That is to say, he has committed a lot of ‘avoidable’ personal foul penalties in recent times. He was ejected against Green Bay for hit on rookie tight end, Luke Musgrave, and was subsequently suspended for 2 games, reduced from the initial 4 game suspension proposed.
At this point, Jackson was already considered a repeat offender with multiple personal foul calls being made against him. Jon Runyan, NFL Vice President of Football Operations, points to Jackson’s ejection in Week 2 against the Washington Commanders as a clear example of this, seen below.

Thus, to make another big hit on a defenceless player, especially the quarterback, was always going to result in further suspension time for Kareem Jackson. And the fact that the suspension was cut last time, and he still came back the very next game to do the same thing, all but assured that Derrick Brooks would upheld the suspension’s full duration.
As a veteran of the league for nearly a decade and a half, Kareem Jackson has seen the league evolve a lot since he was a rookie, with concussions and overall player safety being far higher on the NFL’s priority list. Obviously it is not always easy changing up the way you have been playing football for over 2 decades, but playing in the NFL for an extended period of time necessitates adaptation, something Jackson has yet to do.
Hopefully this will be a wake up call to Kareem Jackson to be more careful and to think before making dangerous hits on opposing players, or his playing days may well come to a long-awaited close.
