While the back-to-back Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs seem to have no problem winning no matter who star quarterback Patrick Mahomes is throwing to, new video of their 2024 first-round draft pick Xavier Worthy has sparked concern.
Worthy’s claim to fame in the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine was his record-breaking 4.21-second 40-yard dash, but speed isn’t what Worthy seemingly lacks at the NFL level.
Kansas City Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy struggles to get off the ball in camp
The video of the new Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy struggling to get off the ball in man coverage shows why some members of the Chiefs fan base are concerned about their 2024 first-round pick.
To say Worthy struggled to get off the ball in camp is an understatement. Worthy was thrown 5-10 yards off his line and put on his back by a defender who shouldn’t have even been close to him.

Kansas City Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy was productive in college
Worthy, who spent all three of his years in college with the Texas Longhorns, produced for the Longhorns in each of those three years.
Worthy only eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark receiving in his final year, which was his junior year. He finished 19 yards short in his freshman year and 240 yards short in his junior year.
Nearly 3,000 yards receiving and 26 receiving touchdowns in three years of college, when paired up with the fastest 40-yard dash in NFL Scouting Combine history was enough for the Chiefs to take Worthy over other notable receivers like Ricky Pearsall, Xavier Legette, Keon Coleman, Ladd McConkey, Ja’Lynn Polk and teammate Adonai Mitchell.
In an article from ESPN, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach explained the decision-making process behind picking Worthy.
“It’s a speed game and the more speed you have on the field, the harder it is for defenses to take away different elements of the game,” general manager Brett Veach said. “Anytime you can add speed and add a guy with that type of versatility, I think you’re going to be interested. Just our ability to play vertical and have speed on the field at all times and having Xavier and Hollywood … I think as the season goes on here, I think we’ll have just an offense that can attack in multiple different ways and always keep defenses guessing.”
Should Kansas City Chiefs fans be concerned about Xavier Worthy’s ability to withstand press coverage?
While the 160-pound WR getting tossed around by his teammates may spark some concern for Chiefs fans, many are saying it is too early to make a judgment on what Worthy will be able to provide for the Chiefs.
Size was the chief concern for Worthy coming into the draft, but Kansas City decided that having generational speed like Worthy was worth whatever downsides lack of size may bring.
Lol saying he’s a bust off of one play is quite the take there. How many times has he also torched the same people going deep – there are clips of that as well. It’s a learning process

Worthy is almost never gonna see press. He’s gonna be in motion on almost every play.

He’s to small to make it in the NFL. The combine will be the highlight of his career.

Well that’s one way to create a passing lane for Kelce 😂

A receiver who continues to go through what Worthy is going through at camp is former Kansas City Chiefs star Tyreek Hill. Hill, who is a similarly small wide receiver, struggles when being pressed at the line. It is how the Chiefs mitigated his damage in the 2023 playoffs.
Good defenses have limited Tyreek this year using press coverage with over the top help
Hypothetically, if Sneed ($1M/yr) is able to jam Tyreek with Justin Reid($10.5M/yr) in support, $11.5M of the Chiefs cap is able to wipe $30M on that particular playpic.twitter.com/mJdG59bTTU

While Hill can still be successfully jammed at the line by corners across the league, he manages to put up numbers that are unmatched by his peers. Constant movement and motion behind the line of scrimmage allows players like Hill to get going early, avoiding hard press coverage. Hill led the league in both receiving yards and touchdowns in 2023.
