For the past few seasons, Travis Kelce has been the measuring stick by which all NFL tight ends have been compared to. However, the Kansas City Chiefs star and Taylor Swift’s boyfriend seemed to have gone in a slump at the start of the season.
While the nine-time Pro Bowler didn’t seem to bring his A-game in their three games thus far, the Chiefs have been unbeaten regardless. On Wednesday, the 34-year-old shared what could be the reason behind his lackluster performances as of late, talking to his brother Jason Kelce in their podcast “New Heights.”
“I’ve had a lot of catches in this league, man,” Travis told Jason. “I’m not worried about the catches and the yards, and all of that, I have the most fun when I get the ball thrown my way, I mean, who doesn’t?
“It has everything to do with execution and just making sure we’re doing everything we can to win these football games, that’s always going to be the goal. I think everyone saw my drop in the fourth quarter and the crucial third down, just trying to do too much before putting the ball away.
“That’s probably the biggest thing for me is making the play in big-time moments like that. I think with how defenses are playing us right now, I’m not really getting a lot of opportunities to make plays down the field, but not using that as an excuse.”
So far this season, Travis Kelce has not scored any touchdowns yet. The three-time Super Bowl champion has also only received the ball eight times for 69 yards, averaging 8.6 yards per game, which is about two yards less than his career average (10.4).
Travis Kelce gets his shot at redemption in Week 4
The Kansas City Chiefs are currently enjoying a three-game win streak despite Travis Kelce’s struggles at the start of the season, but the star tight end said he would like to be able to contribute meaningfully in their following games.
With Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Kelce will have another opportunity to sway the tides of the game to his favor and help extend the team’s winning streak.
Travis Kelce’s next shot to prove himself the best tight end in the NFL comes on Sunday, September 29, as the Chiefs visit the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium. The kick-off will be at 4:25 p.m. ET/3:35 p.m. CT.
