The Kansas City Chiefs will look to defend their title in 2023. One of the challenges is filling out the fringes of the roster which are just as important as the star players. The team has signed a veteran backup quarterback, Blaine Gabbert to a deal.

Kansas City Chiefs Sign Blaine Gabbert
Gabbert was selected 10th overall in the 2011 draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. It is safe to say that he did not live up to those expectations as he only spent three seasons with the team and threw more interceptions than touchdowns. However, he found his footing as a backup quarterback across the league. He has spent time with the 49ers, Bucs, Titans, and Cardinals in the backup role. Now, he gets to back up one of the greatest quarterbacks in the game Patrick Mahomes.

Key Signing For The Team
This may seem like a nothing signing. Mahomes is the starter. There is no debate on that. However, in the past two seasons, the backup quarterback has had to play an important role for the team. In the playoffs a couple of years ago, Chad Henne was called upon to beat the Cleveland Browns. Last year, Mahomes went down with an ankle injury and Henne again had to step in. There is a decent chance that Gabbert will be called upon to run the offense for a period of time. The team needed someone who would not be afraid of the moment and Gabbert fits that bill.
There’s a great chance that Blaine Gabbert never sees the field for Kansas City Chiefs. However, the backup quarterback position is vital for any team. At the very least, he is a veteran presence that can help Patrick Mahomes diagnose defenses and notice things on offense. The Chiefs will have a tall task defending their title this year against a tough AFC.
