The Kansas City Chiefs will enter the 2024 season with Super Bowl aspirations, aiming to win their third title in as many years. Yesterday, during the deadline for NFL teams to reduce their squad to a 53-man roster, Kansas City made multiple transactions and cuts, headlined by the release of wide receivers Justyn Ross and Kadarius Toney. However, on Wednesday, the Chiefs made a late addition to their active roster following the league’s transaction fallout on Tuesday.
Kansas City will sign veteran running back Samaje Perine on Wednesday, with the rusher primed to make the active 53-man roster. Kansas City adds Perine a day after undrafted free agent running back Carson Steele made the team following a standout training camp and preseason.
Kansas City Chiefs Add Samaje Perine to 53-Man Roster.
On Wednesday, the Kansas City Chiefs added to their already explosive offense, inking running back Samaje Perine following his release from the Denver Broncos. According to NFL insider Ari Meirov:
The #Chiefs are signing veteran RB Samaje Perine, who had 693 total yards last season, per
@Schultz_Report. A potential Jerick McKinnon replacement.
On Tuesday, the Denver Broncos released Perine after recording five carries for 16 yards this preseason. The Oklahoma product played in all 17 games for the Broncos last year, recording 238 rushing yards and one touchdown on 4.5 yards per rush attempt. Perine, a fourth-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, started his career with the then-Washington Redskins totaling 635 yards and a touchdown across two seasons. Perine averaged 4.0 yards per carry across seven NFL seasons.
Perine will join a Kansas City Chiefs running back room featuring 2022 seventh-round pick and two-time Super Bowl champ Isiah Pacheco. Meanwhile, Kansas City also has former first-round pick Clyde Edwards Helaire, although he has taken a backseat to Pacheco. Alongside CEH and Pacheco, Perine will compete for touches with rookie standout Carson Steele. The UCLA product had a fine preseason, rushing for 88 yards and two touchdowns in three exhibition games en route to making the active roster.
