Kansas City Chiefs: Team Makes Wave of Roster Cuts Ahead of 53-Man Deadline

Following the conclusion of the 2024 preseason last weekend, the Kansas City Chiefs and the other 31 teams will need to reduce their rosters to 53 players by Tuesday afternoon. Many teams, including Kansas City, are already narrowing their rosters by making multiple roster cuts ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

Following last Thursday’s preseason loss, the Chiefs have cut 12 players on Monday. Headlining the group are quarterback Ian Book and tight end Geor’quarius Spivey. Notably, the Baltimore Ravens cut veteran wideout Russell Gage on Monday, while the San Francisco 49ers released running backs Matt Brieda and Ke’Shawn Vaughn.

On Monday, the Kansas City Chiefs cut down their roster significantly ahead of Tuesday’s deadline. According to NFL insider Aaron Wilson, Kansas City waived cornerbacks Kelvin Joseph, Ekow Boye-Doe, and Miles Battle, quarterback Ian Book, wide receivers Phillips Brooks and Kyle Sheets, guards Griffin McDowell and Nick Torres, long snapper Randen Plattner, defensive end Owen Carney, tight end Geor’quarius Spivey, and defensive tackle Alex Gubner.

On Monday, the New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans made multiple roster cuts alongside the Chiefs. New England parted ways with 14 players, including Steele Chambers, while Tennessee waived nine players. The Chicago Bears have also released nine players on Monday.

The Kansas City Chiefs waived 12 players on Monday, most notably quarterback Ian Book. A former multi-year starter for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Book became a fourth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Book started one game as a rookie, going 12-of-20 for 135 yards and two interceptions. Book signed a reserve future contract with Kansas City earlier this year, going 16-of-22 for 133 yards and two touchdowns against no picks this preseason before his release.

Among the other Monday releases, Spivey caught one pass this preseason, while Kelvin Joseph tallied eight tackles and a forced fumble. Joseph is a former second-round pick in 2021 by the Dallas Cowboys.

With an NFL title win this season, the Kansas City Chiefs will become the first team in the Super Bowl era to win three straight championships. Last season, behind the leadership of two-time MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City bested the San Francisco 49ers in an overtime Super Bowl thriller, 25-22. The year prior, the Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl, 39-35.

According to DraftKings Sportsbook, the Kansas City Chiefs are the favorite to win the Super Bowl at +500, followed by the San Francisco 49ers, Baltimore Ravens, and Detroit Lions. Kansas City is also the favorite to win the AFC and are heavy favorites to make the postseason.
