The Kansas City Chiefs are hoping that the 2024 NFL season brings some semblance of normalcy to their team, as well as a third straight Super Bowl Championship. Unfortunately, the Chiefs’ offseason has been filled with more off-field drama than they probably could have imagined.
Defensive tackle Isaiah Buggs was released from the team following two different arrests during the offseason. One was for animal cruelty as he allegedly left two dogs unattended at a property that he owns. The other was for domestic violence.
Kicker Harrison Butker, who recently became the highest-paid kicker in the NFL, made waves because of controversial comments he made during a commencement speech at Benedictine College back in May. The criticism he received due to his remarks has been ongoing ever since.
Kansas City Chiefs Wide Receiver Rashee Rice Got into Legal Trouble
One of the areas of the Chiefs roster that still has major question marks is the wide receiver position. Last year, Kansas City used the 55th overall pick in the NFL Draft to take Rashee Rice out of SMU in hopes that he could provide some stability and reliability to the position.
And that he did. Rice finished his rookie season with 79 receptions for 938 yards and seven touchdowns.
Rice came up big for the Chiefs in the NFL Playoffs, too. In their opening round victory over the Miami Dolphins, he had eight receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown.
He had 18 receptions for 132 yards in their other three postseason games.
Unfortunately, Rice’s offseason was just as eventful as his rookie year. First, he was involved in a high-speed car accident in which he was allegedly driving 119 miles per hour. What is worse, he reportedly left the scene of the accident before police arrived.
He is currently being sued by two people who were injured in the accident.
Kansas City Chiefs Wide Receiver Rashee Rice Angered Fans with His Initial Comments Regarding His Legal Issues
Back in June, Rice drew a great deal of criticism from fans after he was asked about the accident and his role in it. His response to that question was:
“I’ve learned so much from that. All I can do is mature and continue to grow from that. This is a step in a better direction for me.
“Accidents and stuff like that happen, but all you can do is move forward and walk around being the same person, try to be positive so that everybody can feel your love and your great energy.”
The overall fan response was that they did not think Rice really learned anything. While wanting to be a more mature and positive person is all well and good, referring to driving 119 miles per hour and hitting other vehicles as an “accident” did not go over well fans.
Whether it went over well with the NFL is yet to be seen, and Rice is not even saying if he talked to the powers that be yet.
Kansas City Chiefs Wide Receiver Rashee Rice Will Not Answer Questions About His Legal Troubles Anymore
Perhaps due to the blowback he received for his previous answer to questions regarding the accident, Rice is no longer going to address the situation.
In response to a question about his legal trouble today, Rice said: “It’s still a legal process. My (legal) team is handling that.”
This is an ongoing situation that has various court dates spread throughout the regular season. It is unclear whether or not the NFL will suspend him at all for his actions, though one would not be surprised if they did.
