Next year’s batch of free agency is slowly gaining steam with guys like Houston Texans’ Stefon Diggs and Los Angeles Chargers’ Asante Samuel Jr. projected to get new contracts. Included in that list is Kansas City Chiefs guard Trey Smith.
Smith is poised to enter his fourth season but remains unconcerned about his contract situation. Instead, he is focused on his performance and contributing to the team.
Speaking candidly during training camp, Smith emphasized that he prefers to concentrate on what his coaches expect from him rather than the business aspects of football. His philosophy is straightforward: by maintaining a high level of play, he believes that everything else, including contract negotiations, will fall into place.
Players such as Creed Humphrey and Joe Thuney are also due for new contracts, which adds further complexity to the Chiefs’ financial situation. While Smith has provided great value given his draft position, he may not command the same market-resetting deals as some of his teammates.
Kansas City Chiefs’ Trey Smith Projected To Land $85 Million Contract in 2025 Free Agency
Although there’s a chance Smith might not get as much as some of his Kansas City teammates, he is still projected to land a new contract worth $85 million. According to an NFL analysis by Bleacher Report, the Chiefs guard may get that deal if things go according to plan.
While Smith may not have a Pro Bowl on his resume yet, he’s a terrific, durable guard for a perennial contender, and he’s only 25 years old. It’ll be fairly surprising if Kansas City doesn’t lock him up well before the offseason.
The Chiefs made center Creed Humphrey the league’s highest-paid center late last month. They’ll probably follow suit with Smith sooner than later.
Projected Contract Value: Four Years, $85 Million
As the Chiefs look ahead to contract renewals for several players from the 2021 draft class, including Smith, the organization faces challenging decisions. Although Smith has proven his worth on the field—participating in 50 regular-season games and consistently delivering strong performances—his recent penalties and pressures surrendered may impact his market value.
Ultimately, the outcome of the upcoming season will be critical for Smith. A strong performance in 2024 could bolster his case for a lucrative contract, whether with Kansas City or another team.
