The Kansas City Chiefs have had an eventful offseason, though not always in a good way. While All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce has brought a great deal of positive attention to the team through his relationship with 14-time Grammy Award winner Taylor Swift, other players have, unfortunately, brought negative attention to the organization.
Former defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs was arrested twice this past offseason. His first arrest was for animal neglect and the second was for domestic abuse. The Chiefs released Buggs following his second arrest.
Wide receiver Rashee Rice, too, faced multiple legal issues in the offseason, though he has remained on the team.
Kansas City Chiefs Wide Receiver Rashee Rice Was Arrested Following a Car Crash
On Easter weekend, there was a high-speed car accident on a freeway in Dallas, Texas. One of the vehicles involved, the one that caused the accident, was traveling 119 miles per hour.
It did not take long until Rice was identified as the driver of that vehicle. The car was registered to the Chiefs wide receiver, and he was seen leaving the scene of the accident before emergency responders arrived. A warrant was put out for his arrest, and he turned himself in four days later.
Rice was also involved in an alleged altercation at a Dallas night club in which a security guard was injured. While charges were initially filed against him, the security guard dropped the allegations a few days later.
The car accident that Rice allegedly caused is still being investigated by police, but victims who were hurt in the crash have filed civil lawsuits against him.
Due to the seriousness of the allegations brought against him, many wondered if Rice would be available for Kansas City this year or if he would be suspended by the NFL.
The NFL Has Released a New Statement Regarding Kansas City Chiefs Wide Receiver Rashee Rice
According to Mike Jones of The Athletic, the NFL has made a decision regarding a possible suspension of Rice. Yesterday, a league spokesperson said that the Chiefs wide receiver will not be put on the commissioner’s exempt list.
Per Jones, “Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice won’t be placed on the commissioner’s exempt list stemming from his arrest after being charged with aggravated assault involving a car crash earlier this year — for now, a league spokesman said Thursday in a news video conference. This would clear the way for Rice to play Week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens next Thursday.”
This does not mean, however, that Rice will not be suspended at some point this season. Should the criminal investigation produce evidence that he is guilty of more than what he is already being accused of, he could be suspended at a later date.
For now, though, Kansas City is on track to have their best wide receiver playing with them when they open the 2024 NFL regular season next week.
