Last season, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs went the distance by winning the Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers. In the upcoming campaign, they are once again the team to beat by everyone else in the league.
Under the leadership of head coach Andy Reid, the team aimed to defend its Super Bowl title, having previously won in 2022. The Chiefs concluded the regular season with an 11–6 record, a decrease from their impressive 14–3 record the year prior, but still secured their eighth consecutive AFC West division title.
Despite the dip in performance, the Chiefs showcased resilience in the playoffs. They triumphed over the Miami Dolphins in the Wild Card round and narrowly defeated the Buffalo Bills in the Divisional round, marking their third playoff victory against the Bills in four years. The team then faced the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship, achieving a hard-fought win to advance to their fourth Super Bowl in five years. In a thrilling Super Bowl LVIII, the Chiefs edged out the San Francisco 49ers in overtime, securing their fourth championship title. Mahomes played a pivotal role, earning his third Super Bowl MVP award. The Chiefs’ defense also shone throughout the season, ranking highly in both yardage and points allowed.
Kansas City Chiefs Projected To Win A Lot of Games Ahead of 2024-25 Season
Just like last season, the Chiefs are predicted to come out on top of the league. Cynthia Frelund explained more in an analysis posted on the NFL’s official website.

The Chiefs earn the No. 1 seed in the AFC in 16.9 percent of my simulations, which is a wildly high percentage. Most seasons, the leader is around 10 percent — tops — this early on. The thing about the AFC that intrigues me: The playoffs are volatile (more games with a projected 50/50 range), so earning that bye is theoretically more valuable in this conference than it is in the NFC.
One fun Next Gen Stats note for you: Patrick Mahomes threw 44 deep touchdown passes (20-plus air yards) between 2018 and 2021, which was the second-most in the league over that span. He has thrown only two such touchdowns since 2022. We all saw first-round pick Xavier Worthy break the 40-yard dash record at the NFL Scouting Combine this year (he ran 24.41 mph), so maybe this means the return of deep TD passes from Mahomes (assuming he gets at least a few single-high looks).
The Chiefs’ 2024 season schedule features eight standalone games, including five in primetime. The season will open against the Baltimore Ravens, with Kansas City also facing notable opponents like the Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills. Additionally, they will play on Black Friday for the first time, taking on the Las Vegas Raiders.
With this kind of schedule set to go down soon, the Patrick Mahomes-led team can begin their quest to achieve a three-peat this season. If their projection comes true, there’s a good chance they’ll make history this year.
