Before Patrick Mahomes became the Kansas City Chiefs’ most recognizable superstar he is right now, Len Dawson was the face of the franchise during his time with the team. The superstar quarterback, in turn, shared his experience in meeting the late NFL legend and what exactly he learned from him.
A couple of years ago, Mahomes surpassed Dawson to become the team’s all-time passing leader during their 27-20 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. Entering the game with 28,424 career passing yards, the quarterback needed just 84 yards to break Dawson’s record. He achieved this with a 23-yard completion to Travis Kelce in the second quarter.
Mahomes completed 20 of 28 passes for 291 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Worthy, although he also threw one interception. This achievement saw the QB’s rapid ascent since he joined the Chiefs in 2017, now in his seventh season as the starting quarterback.Since that meeting, Mahomes and the Chiefs have won another Super Bowl when they defeated the San Francisco 49ers earlier this year. All in all, the quarterback has won three rings in his career.
Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes Shares Experience Meeting NFL Legend Len Dawson
Just recently, Mahomes appeared on The Drive on Audacy’s 96.5 The Fan and talked about a number of things. Among the details he shared was his first meeting with Dawson a couple of years ago.
Patrick Mahomes on meeting Len Dawson before he passed: “He’s a pioneer of the quarterback position. He gave me some great advice. I’m very appreciative of being able to pass his record knowing the guy that he is.”
Len Dawson, a revered figure in Chiefs history, played for the team from 1962 to 1975 and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987. His legacy as a leader and performer set a high standard for future quarterbacks in Kansas City.
As he continues to lead the Chiefs, fans and analysts alike are excited to see how far he can take the team, building upon a legacy that Dawson established decades ago. With Mahomes at the helm, the future looks bright for Kansas City as they aim for more championships and further records.
