Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is clearly one of the best players in the NFL today. Entering his age 29 season, Mahomes has already won two NFL MVP Awards, three Super Bowls, and three Super Bowl MVP Awards. The Chiefs’ star quarterback has made a name for himself in the NFL with incredibly athletic plays and magician-like throws that very few others can even dream of making.
Such a play happened on Saturday night in a preseason game Kansas City played against the Detroit Lions. Midway through the first quarter, Mahomes scrambled to his right as Detroit’s ferocious pass rush beat down on him. At the last second before taking what would have been a sack, the two-time MVP threw a behind-the-back pass to tight end Travis Kelce, who caught the ball and ran for a first down.

It was just one more example of the kind of play that has made the Mahomes and Kelce connection so special over the years, one that has led to three Super Bowl wins in five years.
Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes Says He Threw the Pass Because Travis Kelce Ran the Wrong Route
After he returned to the bench, Mahomes was asked by Trent Green about his amazing behind-the-back pass. His answer was quite funny.
“Long story short,” Mahomes began, Travis didn’t run the route he was supposed to run, and it was kind of a behind-the-back pass because I was mad. I was p—– off at Travis. He was supposed to run a flat route– I don’t know if you could hear me on the broadcast, I’m yelling at him– and then he doesn’t run it. So, out of spite, I threw a behind-the-back pass, but now it’s going to be a highlight.”
It certainly was a highlight as the play went viral on social media almost immediately after it happened.
The Kansas City Chiefs Have a Good Chance at Winning the Super Bowl Because of Patrick Mahomes
There has been a great deal said and written about the Chiefs’ lack of a true number one wide receiver. While Rashee Rice showed promise as a rookie, Kansas City has not had what could be a true number one at the position ever since they traded Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins.
And while Kelce is an All-Pro tight end and lethal receiving threat, he is also on the back nine of his career. Who knows how long he can keep producing at the level Chiefs fans have come to expect from him?
The key to their success, though, is Mahomes. Kansas City won each of the last two Super Bowls without a bonified number one wide receiver because of their quarterback’s brilliance.
And the scary thing, for the rest of the NFL, is that he is just entering his prime. Not only does Kansas City have a good chance at the first Super Bowl three-peat, but they also have an opportunity to win many more titles in the years to come.
