The Kansas City Chiefs and head coach Andy Reid are entering 2024 with the chance to compete for their third-straight Super Bowl title and fourth in five seasons.
After it took 21 seasons for Reid to finally capture a Super Bowl title, Reid is seeking his third-straight Super Bowl to continue the almost unstoppable run since the franchise landed Patrick Mahomes as its starting QB. Reid is just the fourth coach to make five Super Bowl appearances, a third Super Bowl title would put Reid with Bill Belichick, Chuck Noll, Bill Walsh and Joe Gibbs as the only head coaches to win at least three Super Bowl titles.
Reid has never had a losing season with Kansas City in his 11 seasons, and has double-digit win seasons in each of the last 10 years. During that stretch, Reid has eight straight AFC West championships, six straight conference championship appearances, four AFC Championships and two Super Bowl titles. The Chiefs are just the third team in NFL history to make four Super Bowls in a five-season span, joining the 1990-1993 Buffalo Bills and the 2014-2018 New England Patriots
The Kansas City Chiefs are 128-51 (.715 win percentage) in Andy Reid’s 11 seasons, as Reid has 15 playoff wins with the franchise. He is the only head coach in NFL history to win 100 games with two different franchises and the only head coach to win 10 playoff games with two different franchises. He also has taken the Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles to four consecutive conference championship games, the only coach ever to accomplish the feat for two organizations.
Reid was granted a contract extension in the offseason and as long as Mahomes is under center, it feels like the Chiefs will be the team to beat in the NFL. Still, with so much money slotted to the top QB in the NFL — and a major offseason deal on defense this offseason to lock down Chris Jones — it’s been impossible to keep the team in tact season after season, yet Reid still finds a way to make Super Bowl runs, year after year.
Reid and Mahomes can’t take all the credit, though, Chiefs GM Brett Veach has had the task of filling holes when the team has been forced to move on from premium talent and he’s done it to perfection. As it stands, this year’s roster looks more talented than last years, where Mahomes was forced to get the ball to Travis Kelce and lean on rookie Rashee Rice as his top wideout. Although Rice got better as the season went on and contributed in a major way, his status for 2024 remains uncertain with pending legal issues hanging over his head.
But Veach went out and signed Hollywood Brown as a proven downfield threat and added the fastest wideout in the draft by selecting Xavier Worthy from Texas in the first round. If all three of those receivers can be on the field at once it will be hard to stop the KC offense, but the Arrowhead Report thinks the Chiefs could add one more veteran pass-catcher to make Mahomes and company truly unstoppable in 2024.
Kansas City Chiefs Urged To Add Pro Bowl WR Michal Thomas To Help Win Third-Straight Super Bowl
The Arrowhead Report believes the Chiefs are missing a big-bodied WR to compliment the arsenal of speedsters and believes the former Saints wideout is a no-risk option for this season.
CBS Sports has listed Thomas as one of 10 notable free agents still unsigned this offseason.
“Once heralded as one of the top route-running starters at his position, Thomas has played just 20 games the last four seasons,” CBS Sports writes. “But he was fairly effective when healthy in 2023 and still boasts solid size as a perimeter target.”
While bringing in a receiver who simply can’t stay healthy could be seen as a gamble, sometimes a change of scenery is just what a player needs and there’s a chance Thomas could thrive in a specific role for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Thomas hauled in 39 receptions for 448 yards and a touchdown last season and averaged a nice 11.5 yards per reception. In Thomas’ first five games, he surpassed 50 receiving yards in each, which shows that the talent is still there…if the body allows it.
With the Chiefs chasing history, a cheap one-year deal for Thomas, who would have a genuine shot at a Super Bowl, could be tempting. Plus, he wouldn’t be the go-to guy, either.
Travis Kelce, Brown, Worthy, and running back Isiah Pacheco would all command the defense’s attention, allowing Thomas, who is still a matchup nightmare, to go about his business.
