Prior to the Kansas City Chiefs’ Week 2 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, the Patrick Mahomes-led team overcame the Baltimore Ravens. Those two matches led ESPN to name linebacker Leo Chenal as the team’s most important role player
In the Chiefs’ Week 1 victory over the Ravens, Chenal proved to be a pivotal player, leading the team in defensive stops. His versatility was on display as he lined up in various positions, including on the edge of the defensive line. The linebacker expressed his appreciation for this expanded role, noting how it allows him to grow and better understand his responsibilities.

Chenal highlighted the importance of mastering the defensive calls and being familiar with all linebacker positions. His ability to adapt and accept added pressure reflects the trust the coaching staff has in him. Defensive tackle Chris Jones praised his effectiveness, emphasizing his contributions whether in coverage, setting the edge, or playing in the trenches.
Despite not being a full-time starter, Chenal’s impact was significant. He was instrumental in containing Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, often tasked with spying him during critical moments. Additionally, he excelled on special teams, showcasing his speed and power, which impressed special teams coordinator Dave Toub.
ESPN Names Leo Chenal as Kansas City Chiefs’ Most Important Role Player

Just recently, ESPN released its list of the most important role players from each team in the NFL. According to Adam Teicher, Chenal fulfills that role for the Chiefs.
“Chenal has filled a lot of roles for the Chiefs. In Sunday’s game against the Bengals, Chenal lined up as a defensive end, defensive tackle, inside linebacker and outside linebacker.
He also got a couple of snaps on offense as a blocker in short-yardage situations and was in for 17 special teams plays. Chenal has been increasingly used as a rusher in passing situations and has the Chiefs’ third-highest pressure percentage (10.3%) among any of their players with 10 or more pass rushes,” Teicher wrote.
Chenal’s determination to maintain momentum is evident as he aims to build on his performances week after week. His adaptability and skill set make him a valuable asset to the Chiefs’ defense, and the coaching staff is eager to continue utilizing his talents in various roles.

As he grows into his responsibilities, the linebacker is poised to play a key role in the Chiefs’ success this season. If ESPN’s analysis on him pans out, Kansas City will have another star in the making as the season progresses.
