The Kansas City Chiefs are trying to do something that no team has done in NFL history: win the Super Bowl three times in a row. While there have been several teams in the Super Bowl era that have won two in a row, there has been just one team to have won three straight titles before the NFL/AFL merger: the Green Bay Packers.
They have actually accomplished the feat twice, winning three-consecutive from 1929-1931 and again from 1965-1967. Their most recent three-peat included the first two Super Bowls, the first of which came against Kansas City.
Now, 56 years later, one member of that legendary Packers team is cheering for the Chiefs to make history.
Green Bay Packers Legend Jerry Kramer Is Rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs
While some players may like their records and accolades to remain untouched, others actively cheer for players that come after them to surpass the standard.
That is exactly what former Packers guard Jerry Kramer is doing. In a recent interview with Elizabeth Merrill of ESPN, the Vince Lombardi-era legend revealed that he does not watch much football anymore but will be tuning in to watch the Chiefs this season in hopes that they can win their third consecutive Super Bowl.
“They’re invincible right now,” Kramer told Merrill. “They’re supermen. And who the hell in the world can defeat them?
“It’s just human nature to relax when you succeed, and everybody is telling you how wonderful you are. I think that’s probably the biggest thing they have to fight.”
And while some “old school” players may not care for the flashy nuances of the modern game, especially the trick throws Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is known for, Kramer rather enjoys it. Of Mahomes’ behind the back pass to tight end Travis Kelce during a preseason game, Kramer said, “I kind of got a kick out of it.”
Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid Is Chase Jerry Kramer’s Old Coach, Vince Lombardi
The Chiefs, of course, have won three Super Bowls in the past five years. They have accomplished this level of success under the guidance of head coach Andy Reid, who himself has ties to the Packers organization. He was on the coaching staff of the team that won Super Bowl XXXI back in 1996.
Now, Reid is trying to lead his Chiefs team down the trail that the Lombardi Packers blazed. A Super Bowl win in 2024 would not only tie the Packers’ record for most consecutive NFL titles, but it would also put them on pace to match another special form of history.
A Super Bowl win this year would be Reid’s fifth Super Bowl win as a couch (four as a head coach, one as an assistant). It would also set the Chiefs on pace to match the Lombardi Packers’ achievement of winning five titles in seven seasons.
Kansas City would need to win the Super Bowl this year and next to match that feat.
One can bet that Kramer would tune in for that, too.
