Harrison Butker’s offseason has become the talk of the town after making such a controversial speech about several sensitive topics. Turns out, his Kansas City Chiefs teammates are supporting his right to express his views, even if they don’t necessarily agree with him.
Butker stood by his contentious college graduation speech delivered at Benedictine College. He expressed deliberate intent and unwavering support for his statements despite facing backlash from various quarters, including the Los Angeles Chargers and tennis icon Serena Williams.
During his speech, Butker touched on controversial topics such as marriage, parenthood, President Joe Biden’s policies, and gender ideologies, underscoring his Catholic faith and personal convictions.
He emphasized that his delivery was rooted in love rather than malice, aiming to openly articulate his values. Post-speech, Butker expressed no remorse, acknowledging the divisive nature of his remarks and the resulting polarization.
Harrison Butker Shares How Kansas City Chiefs Teammates Reacted After Controversial Speech
After the NFL kicker went viral for his speech, various personalities and groups blasted him right away. In an article by Adam Teicher for ESPN, Butker expressed his appreciation for his teammates, even though they don’t necessarily share his views.
Butker’s comments didn’t go unnoticed by those in the Chiefs’ locker room. He said he’s had deep conversations with many of his teammates since, with both sides emerging with a better understanding of the other.
“It’s been a beautiful thing to see,” Butker said. “That’s what’s so special about sports and so special about football. There aren’t many sports where you have 50 to 100 guys with a bunch of different beliefs and we’re all fighting together to win. So you have a bunch of different personalities, a bunch of different backgrounds, and we’re all there together trying to understand each other and realize that, at the end of the day, we have one goal together — and that’s to win football games.”
Meanwhile, the Chiefs have solidified Butker as the NFL’s highest-paid kicker with a lucrative four-year extension worth $25.6 million, including $17.75 million guaranteed. Butker’s deal surpasses the previous top-paid kickers, Justin Tucker and Jake Elliott.
Tied to the Chiefs until 2028, Butker negotiated the contract himself, expressing excitement about the extension. With a remarkable 89.1% career field goal accuracy, Butker’s clutch performances have been pivotal in key games for the Chiefs, including Super Bowl victories.
Even though his views have created a lot of backlash from different sectors, the Chiefs kicker is fortunate to have a safe space with his teammates in Kansas City. Hopefully, the team can move on from these issues as they prepare for the upcoming season.
