The Kansas City Chiefs are back-to-back Super Bowl Champions and are poised to become the first team since the Green Bay Packers to win three consecutive NFL titles (the Packers did it twice, in 1929-32 and 1966-68). With Patrick Mahomes at quarterback and with a plethora of notable talent players around him, they certainly should be one of the preseason favorites to win it all.
Unfortunately, recent news surrounding the Chiefs has been far from positive. Wide receiver Rashee Rice is facing some legal trouble following his role in a high-speed crash from which he allegedly left the scene. Reports of a shooting in which he was involved while at SMU have also surfaced, as have allegations he was involved in a fight at a Dallas night club.
Two of their offensive linemen, Wayna Morris and Chukwuebuka Godrick were arrested over the weekend on marijuana charges, but have since been released. As the NFL no longer has consequences for marijuana use, it is probable that this event will soon be forgotten.
Kansas City Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker Made Controversial Remarks During a Commencement Speech
In his controversial speech, Butker called out the Catholic Church and American government leaders for supporting a society in which women have as much of a freedom to have careers as men.
He said:
“For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. You should be proud of all that you have achieved to this point in your young lives. I want to speak directly to you briefly because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you.
“How many of you are sitting here now about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career? Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.
“I can tell you that my beautiful wife, Isabelle, would be the first to say that her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother. I’m on the stage today and able to be the man I am because I have a wife who leans into her vocation.
“I’m beyond blessed with the many talents God has given me, but it cannot be overstated that all of my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife, and embrace one of the most important titles of all: homemaker.”
Butker’s comments drew criticism from fans and celebrities alike. Even the nuns who founded and sponsor the college, Benedictine College, released a statement in which they expressed their disagreement with what he said.
Now, even Eddie Vedder, the lead singer of Pearl Jam, is taking shots at the Chiefs’ kicker.
Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam Has Strong Words for Kansas City Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker
During a concert this weekend, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam interrupted their show to tell fans how he really feels about Vedder’s comments:
“The irony was that the football player – well, kicker…You see the kicker doesn’t have the pads because he doesn’t tackle anybody or get tackled – but he started telling men, ‘Don’t forget to puff up your chest and be more masculine. Don’t lose your masculinity.’ The irony was that when he was saying that, he looked like such a f—ing p—- There’s nothing more masculine than a strong man supporting a strong woman.”
It has been almost a week, and Butker’s speech is still drawing criticism from people all over the country. While many will be rooting for the Chiefs to win it all again, few will be cheering for his personal success.
