The Kansas City Chiefs have not had the best offseason in terms of their public relations department. Wide receiver Rashee Rice got into some legal trouble stemming from his involvement in a high-speed car accident. Defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs was released following two arrests, including one for domestic violence.
However, the player that has garnered the most attention (other than Travis Kelce for his relationship with Taylor Swift) has been kicker Harrison Butker. Typically, whenever a kicker is talked about, it is because they have made legendary kicks or have come in clutch on multiple occasions (see Adam Vinatieri), or because they are downright awful.
Butker is neither exceptionally great nor terrible. He has drawn attention to himself for reasons entirely outside of football.
Kansas City Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker Offended Various Marginalized Groups During Commencement Speech
In early May, Butker gave the commencement speech at Benedictine College in Kansas. A traditional and conservative Catholic establishment, Benedictine invited Butker because he is an outspoken Catholic person who is not shy about his faith.
Unfortunately, it was a decision that even the nuns who founded the college came to regret. During his speech, Butker made comments that degraded women, the LGBTQ+ community, Jews, and his fellow Catholics (those that do not follow the Traditional Latin Mass, or TLM).
Recently, Butker also took to social media to criticize the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris, as many of his fellow conservative Christians did. They accused the performers and organizers of mocking “The Last Supper,” a famous painting of Jesus and his disciples that was painted by LGBTQ+ community member Leonardo di Vinci.
The Kansas City Chiefs Signed Harrison Butker to a $25 Million Contract Extension
As reported earlier today, the Chiefs and their controversial kicker have come to an agreement on a four-year deal worth $25.6 million. $17.8 million of that deal is guaranteed.
Not only does this contract tie Butker to the Chiefs for the foreseeable future, but it also makes him the highest paid kicker in the NFL.
His $6.4 million annual salary is $400,000 more per year than Jake Elliot of the Philadelphia Eagles and Justin Tucker of the Baltimore Ravens are receiving. His $17.8 million in guarantees is also the highest for an NFL kicker.
NFL Fans Have Mixed Reactions to the Kansas City Chiefs Extending Harrison Butker
As one might imagine, NFL fans were fairly split on their reactions to the Chiefs signing Butker to the richest contract in NFL history for a kicker.

The Harrison Butker extension… making him the highest paid kicker….underscores the inherent truth of the NFL: the better you are at the job the more a team is willing to put up with pure and simple.
