Kansas City Chiefs: Head Coach Andy Reid Has High Praise for 2 Specific Players in Training Camp

The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to do something that no other NFL team has done: win three consecutive Super Bowls. The Green Bay Packers won three straight NFL Championships on two different occasions, but no team has done so in the Super Bowl era.

Kansas City, of course, has won each of the last two Super Bowls. They won Super Bowl LVII against the Philadelphia Eagles and Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers.

This past weekend, the Chiefs were one of the first teams to have their players report for this year’s training camp. The early start shows just how serious they are about chasing NFL history.

As practice wrapped up over the weekend, head coach Andy Reid had some high praise for two players in particular.

Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid Enjoys Having Carson Wentz as His Backup Quarterback

One of the more significant moves that the Chiefs made this offseason was to sign a new veteran quarterback to backup two-time NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes. To fill this roll, Kansas City turned to Carson Wentz, himself a former Pro Bowl quarterback and Super Bowl Champion.

Wentz takes the place of Blaine Gabbert, who was allowed to leave in free agency.

After practice on Sunday, Reid said the following about Wentz:

“Carson’s done a nice job. He’s got a good way about him. He’s got good vision. [He’s] a good football player. We’re glad to have him here.”

Wentz spent last season with the Los Angeles Rams after stops with the Washington Commanders and Indianapolis Colts.

Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid Is Glad Chris Jones Is in Training Camp

Last season, All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones was not in training camp. This is, of course, due to the fact that he was holding out for a new contract. His hold out lasted until after Week One in the regular season when the two sides finally agreed to a deal that made him the highest paid defensive tackle in the NFL.

Now in camp, Reid is happy that he can talk about Jones, his play, and how he affects the team instead of having to address questions about his holdout:

“Chris is one of the team captains. He’s been that now for the last couple of years; [he’s] so well respected. [It’s great] to have him out here. He always brings energy. He has fun out here — and I’m glad he’s here.”

Having Jones in camp is certainly a great thing for Kansas City, who had one of the top defenses in the NFL this year. With wide receiver Rashee Rice facing a long suspension and the rest of the wide receiver room lacking top-tier talent, they will once again need their defense to be one of the best if they hope to repeat as Super Bowl champions again.
