The Kansas City Chiefs will head into next weekend’s primetime tilt with the Atlanta Falcons holding a 2-0 record following their second straight nerve-wrenching victory against a playoff-caliber roster. On Sunday, Kansas City bested the Cincinnati Bengals 26-25 on a walk-off field goal, set up by a brutal defensive pass interference against opposing defensive back Daijahn Anthony. Chiefs signal-caller Patrick Mahomes did not play like his two-time MVP self but did enough to lead his team on an 11-play winning drive.
However, the AFC West club accumulated only 24 yards of offense in the final three minutes, with the DPI on Cinci worth 29 yards. In the third quarter, Mahomes also tossed an interception to corner DJ Turner, with the play getting negated over illegal contact. Fans have long complained about the referees “helping” Kansas City win ball games. Still, one shocking statistic proves how much Mahomes has benefitted from the officials and defensive miscues.
Patrick Mahomes Has Another Interception Annulled
According to Sneaky Joe Sports of WGR 550 in New York:
Patrick Mahomes just threw his 17th INT that was called back due to a defensive penalty. Most in the NFL since 2018.
In Saturday’s win, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes had another interception negated via penalty, his 17th since 2018. However, Mahomes tossed an interception to Cincinnati Bengals defender Cam Taylor-Britt three plays later, with the lengthy corner making a leaping, one-handed pick deep down the sideline.
Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs have earned a reputation of being a favorite of the officials. In early October last season, the New York Jets picked off Mahomes on a third-and-long late in the fourth quarter while trailing 23-20, only for star corner Sauce Gardner to get hit with a holding penalty. Gardner took exception, putting the NFL on blast for the controversial call through his Twitter handle. However, to play devil’s advocate, Mahomes has tossed multiple interceptions after taking a deep shot following a defensive offside. Nevertheless, Mahomes leads in a stat that will likely send NFL fans spiraling.
