The Kansas City Chiefs are arguably the most prestigious franchise in the NFL at this time. It is no secret they have had success, winning the Super Bowl three of the last five seasons.
With that said, this does not mean they do everything perfectly. There are still some decisions they make that are controversial at best and morally questionable at worst. Their latest signing reveals a big problem in today’s era of sports.
Kansas City Chiefs Sign RB Kareem Hunt Years After Viral Incident
According to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, the Kansas City Chiefs are signing RB Kareem Hunt following the significant injury to RB Isiah Pacheco. This is a reunion for Hunt and the Chiefs, as he spent his first two years in the NFL in Kansas City.
However, Hunt’s tenure with the Chiefs came to an abrupt end in 2018. That is because there was a viral video of Hunt pushing a woman and kicking her while she was on the ground. This created huge negative publicity for Hunt and the Chiefs and resulted in Hunt being released from the team shortly following the incident.
At the time, it was a significant loss for Kansas City. Hunt had over 2,000 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns in just 27 games with the Chiefs. Nevertheless, the team still made the AFC Championship that season and won the Super Bowl the next season. As for Hunt, he spent his next five seasons with the Cleveland Browns.
There is no question Hunt got released from the team due to that incident and reportedly not being truthful about said incident to the team. Now, that appears to be in the past for the Chiefs, as they still signed Hunt regardless.
Similar to 2025 MLB All-Star Game Decision
The Kareem Hunt situation is very similar to something that recently happened in the MLB. Last year, it was decided that the Atlanta Braves would host the 2025 MLB All-Star Game.
Why is this similar? Because the MLB decided to take away the All-Star Game from Atlanta in 2021 due to a voting law passed in Georgia at that time. It is a law that is still in effect in Georgia today. Yet, the MLB decided to give Atlanta back their All-Star Game regardless.
Hypocrisy in Sports
What do these two events have in common? They reveal a hypocrisy in sports and how public relations are handled in the sports world.
It shows that franchises and leagues are willing to jump on the “moral high ground” side when it benefits them and there is a headline to be had from it. However, when the attention on both of these incidents died down, the Chiefs and the MLB quietly returned Hunt to Kansas City and the All-Star Game to Atlanta.
No matter what side you fall on for both of these situations, one thing should be taken away from these events by everybody. That is the fact that you can take public statements on “moral” situations from franchises and leagues with a massive grain of salt.
