The Kansas City Chiefs are on top of the football world. They have established themselves as a dynasty after winning the last two Super Bowls. Several key players allowed the Chiefs to come up victorious in each of those two Super Bowls.
Now, one of those players appears to be changing positions. Which player is going to do this? Read below to find out.
Kadarius Toney Taking Running Back Snaps at Training Camp
According to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, the Kansas City Chiefs revealed plans to have WR Kadarius Toney take snaps at the running back position. This was emphasized by Chiefs head coach Andy Reid. He believes there were positive moments there last season and Reid believes that Toney enjoys playing that role.
Super Bowl Success
Believe it or not, Kadarius Toney was a key player in one Super Bowl victory for the Chiefs. This came in Super Bowl LVII when the Chiefs took on the Philadelphia Eagles. During this game, Toney was key on special teams, having two punt returns for 77 yards. On top of this, Toney had a touchdown reception in that game, as the Chiefs went on to win Super Bowl LVII by a final score of 38-35.
However, he did not even come close to replicating that success in the Chiefs’ next playoff run. That is because Toney was inactive for every game of the 2023-24 Chiefs’ playoff run.
Dropped Passes Causing Position Change?
Kansas City Chiefs fans are all too familiar with the team’s dropped pass issues last season. The team led the league in dropped passes last season (44). This was an average of 6.9% of all passes thrown to Chiefs wide receivers.
It is important to note that Kadarius Toney was at the center of this issue. He had several notable dropped passes last season, causing Chiefs fans to go irate. This arguably led to Toney being declared inactive for each Chiefs playoff game last season.
So, will potentially switching Toney to running back allow him to be more effective for the Chiefs? Or will the problem transition to Toney having too many fumbles as a running back for Kansas City? We will have to see if Toney ends up having a major role in this position going forward and how well he performs in this position.
