The New England Patriots traded outside linebacker Josh Uche to the Kansas City Chiefs, hoping he would enhance their pass rush. In return for Uche, the Chiefs gave the Patriots a 2026 sixth-round draft pick. With Uche in their lineup, the Chiefs add depth and agility to their defense, looking at another Super Bowl run.
Uche’s Impact on the Chiefs’ Pass Rush
The Chiefs have been among the most elite units this season on defense, but they have lacked pressure consistently off the edges. Uche is coming off a breakout 2022 season in which he recorded 11.5 sacks and offered a quick burst off the line of scrimmage, with a refined skill set in disrupting the quarterback. With 20.5 career sacks since joining the NFL, Uche’s addition gives Kansas City another important tool, perhaps a strong way to lighten the load on star defensive tackle Chris Jones from trying to carry much of the load in the pass rush.
What Uche Brings to Kansas City
One of Uche’s more significant attributes is his versatility. Although known specifically for attacking the quarterback, he’s versatile enough to fit into many defensive schemes. This allows them to use him in passing situations to play to his strengths while bringing flexibility and power into the rotation. Though Uche hasn’t regained form from 2022 this season after recording just two sacks through six games-Kansas City’s system may allow for him to get comfortable with a role that places the most emphasis on what he does best: rush the passer.
Playoff Outlook
Adding Uche better positions the Kansas City Chiefs to extend their trend of defensive dominance as they go all out to make a third consecutive appearance in the Super Bowl. His presence is going to be highly instrumental during the postseason, where the ability to press top quarterbacks will be high on the agenda. With Uche in the mix, the Chiefs gain an advantage in the chase to be one of the most balanced teams in the NFL as they go into the second half of the season.
The Chiefs trading for Josh Uche says a lot about their will to strengthen their defense. If Uche finds his rhythm going in Kansas City, that could very well be what this Chiefs defense was missing to take it to the next level and seal a Super Bowl run for them.
