Left tackle continues to be a problem for the Kansas City Chiefs for the 2024 season, which could ultimately hinder their chances of being the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls. Rookie second-round pick Kingsley Suamataia opened 2024 as the starter but struggled in his first two career starts. Not only did the Chiefs bench him for the remaining 14 offensive snaps of Week 2, but they also benched him ahead of Week 3 and lost the starting job.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ replacement LT has been OK
Second-year offensive tackle Wanya Morris has taken over as Patrick Mahomes’ blindside protector since Week 3. Since taking over, Morris has played OK but nothing spectacular in his eight starts, hence his 21 pressures, 13 hurries, five QB hits, and three sacks allowed. His 60.4 pass-blocking grade ranks 58th, 55.6 run-blocking grade ranks 64th, and 57.3 overall PFF grade ranks 65th out of 81 qualified offensive tackles, per PFF.
Andy Reid didn’t rule out signing a veteran offensive tackle when asked about Wanya Morris’ performance last week and whether they would consider a veteran replacement.
“I actually thought Wanya got a little bit better this week,” Reid said. “He’s been doing that for the most part every week, but the injury stepped in on it last week for a while. I felt like he did some good things for a young guy, he improved and will continue to improve with reps there. Then, as far as a veteran player goes, [general manager Brett] Veach is always keeping his eyes open, so he would be the one that heads that up, and he birddogs all that.”
A top free agent has been medically cleared
As previously discussed on Gridiron Heroics, Pro Bowl left tackle D.J. Humphries has been medically cleared to play. Humphries spent nine seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, making a Pro Bowl selection in 2021, and is nearly 11 months removed from an ACL tear in Week 17. Since he carried a high cap hit and wasn’t ready to play at the beginning of this season, the team made the difficult choice to release him during the offseason.

Since he’s medically cleared, he will be an intriguing option for a team contending for the playoffs if an offensive tackle were to suffer an injury or replace a struggling starter. Since Morris hasn’t performed well, fans are calling on Brett Veach to sign the Pro Bowler.

#Chiefs need to go all in to add him to the Practice Squad and see if he can help tackle the KC situation (like that pun?). If nothing more, it might push Morris and Taylor to play better with a veteran of his talent behind them. @ChiefsBlitz

Bad MCL, ACL, & Back issues. I’d love to see Kc bring him in but fans should keep their expectations realistic.

If Veach doesn’t at least kick the tires I’d be shocked. The LT situation in KC is dire right now.
