The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to be the first team in the Super Bowl era to win three consecutive Super Bowls and making sure the future is bright is critical. They seemingly are doing so on Thursday afternoon as it is announced that the team has agreed to a three-year, $18 million extension with $10.1 million guaranteed with tight end Noah Gray.
Noah Gray has not had too much action as the back-up tight end on the Kansas City Chiefs behind Travis Kelce throughout his career. However, since being selected out of Duke in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL draft, Gray has recorded 63 catches on 85 targets for 640 yards (10.2 yards per reception) with four touchdown grabs as well as two carries for a pair of yards and a rushing touchdown.
With this being his third season with the Kansas City Chiefs, Gray understands the playbook and can replace Kelce if he gets injured during the season. While he is not known to be as dominant, he was able to play in 87% of the snaps in Week 1 last year, the only game that Travis Kelce missed. This is going to be the team’s future at some point at the tight end position so getting him at a team-friendly deal will be great for the Chiefs going through the season.
This is not the first offensive player to see an extension with the Kansas City Chiefs as last month, Pro Bowl center Creed Humphrey also signed a new deal.
Will the Kansas City Chiefs be the top offense in the NFL this season?
The Kansas City Chiefs have a lot of exciting weapons as the 2024 NFL season is prepared to get underway. The team was not able to be that prolific offense last season as they were sixth in passing yards (246.4), 19th in rushing (104.9) and 15th in points per game (21.8). The Chiefs were able to play well defensively and adjust their team.
This season, they added Hollywood Brown (who will not be active Week 1) and rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy, to bolster the wide receiver room and get speed. This team should be a top 10 offense but they do not have the need to play like the Miami Dolphins or the Detroit Lions.
