Even after winning the Super Bowl for the second consecutive year, the Kansas City Chiefs still face an uphill battle if they want to win it for the third time next season. This can only be possible if the front office improves the defense by signing Devin White to a projected $21 million contract in free agency.
The previous season started with the Chiefs as the defending champions. By the end of the regular season, Kansas City was on top of the AFC West division with an 11 -6 record.
By then, the Patrick Mahomes-led team demolished several teams on their way to winning the Super Bowl. These include the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, and San Francisco 49ers.
Although the Chiefs boasted a second-place defense last season, there’s no guarantee that the team would still play that well later this year. To ensure their defensive lineup performs well, the front office must consider signing Devin White.
Kansas City Chiefs Seen As Best Landing Spot For Devin White In Free Agency
Although White’s last season was marred by a foot injury and a disappointing performance, the upside is still there for Kansas City to exploit. Kristopher Knox explained more in his article for Bleacher Report.
“However, the Bucs, who pushed K.J. Britt into the starting lineup late in the season, may be ready to move on. For White, moving from Tampa to Kansas City—a move that offensive tackle Donovan Smith made last year—could be very enticing.
It’s always nice to join a legitimate title contender, and White would be a fine fit in Steve Spagnuolo’s aggressive defense. The Chiefs may also need help at the second level with Willie Gay and Drue Tranquil scheduled for free agency,” Knox wrote.
A change of scenery might do White’s career some good, especially if he gets to play for a defending champion. Add the chance to work alongside Mahomes and company, and there’s a possibility White can get out of the rut has been in.
It remains to be seen where White will end up in the coming days. In any case, his fit with the Chiefs is as good as it gets for the Buccaneers linebacker.
