Kansas City Chiefs star Chris Jones is now the biggest NFL star that has yet to report to his team amid an ongoing contract dispute. The San Francisco 49ers ended their saga with Nick Bosa on Wednesday to the tune of a five-year, $170 million extension. For his part, however, Jones is still holding out as both parties fail to find common ground.
Jones will already miss Kansas City’s season opener against the Detroit Lions on Thursday because of this dispute. However, reports indicate that he will still be in the building.
Kansas City Chiefs Star Chris Jones Will Watch Lions Game From Stadium Suite
According to Charean Williams of PFT, Jones will be in attendance on Thursday when the Chiefs host the Lions in Arrowhead Stadium:
“Jones, who is holding out for a contract extension, will watch the game from his suite at Arrowhead Stadium, according to multiple sources,” Williams wrote.
The fact that Jones will be physically present in the stadium to support his teammates is a good sign for Kansas City. It is obvious that no bridges have been burned (at least not yet), and it seems that both sides could be closing in on an agreement.
It is also worth noting that Jones was also present during a team-initiated charity event on Wednesday. Clearly, the four-time Pro Bowler isn’t distancing himself from the squad too much.
Kansas City Chiefs Missing Another Star Vs. Lions
Unfortunately for Chiefs fans, it’s not just Jones who will be watching from the sidelines on Thursday when they kick off their title defense. Star tight end Travis Kelce has also been ruled out due to a concerning knee injury, leaving Kansas City without their second and third-best players available against Detroit.
The good news on the Kelce front is that the injury isn’t considered serious. In fact, Kansas City reportedly hopes that the four-time All-Pro TE is able to return to action next week against the Carolina Panthers.
