Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is dealing with an injury in the preseason. The team hopes he will be available to play in Week 1. However, it’s too early to tell if Herbert will heal in time to play the Las Vegas Raiders on Sept. 8.
The Chargers will play their first preseason game under new head coach Jim Harbaugh on Aug. 10, when they take on the Seattle Seahawks. It doesn’t look as though Herbert will participate in any preseason games with the Chargers.
Justin Herbert has a foot injury
Per a statement by the Chargers on Thursday, Hebert is dealing with plantar fascia in his right foot:
Following yesterday’s practice, Justin Herbert was diagnosed with an injury to the plantar fascia in his right foot. Doctors have recommended approximately two weeks in a boot — followed by a graduated return to play protocol — with the expectation that he will be ready for the start of the regular season
The expectation is for Herbert to play in Week 1
The Chargers wrote that the “expectation is that Herbert will play in Week 1. However, many recovery times for injuries don’t meet initial expectations.
The Chargers QB2 is Easton Stick. The Chargers also have Max Duggan and Casey Bauman on the quarterback roster for training camp. The Chargers’ depth at quarterback is concerning, and one would assume the Chargers will try and add a veteran quarterback now that Hebert is out of practice.
Could Ryan Tannehill be an option for the Chargers?
Veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill is still a free agent. Per a transcript by CBS Sports of Tannehill’s comments on the Scoop City podcast, the Pro Bowl quarterback recently said he would sign with a team this season if the “right situation” came around:
“It’s a weird feeling, right?” Tannehill said of not having a team during training camp. “Just because I’ve done it for so long. … I’m staying in shape and staying ready if the right thing pops up. … [But] right now, it’s gonna depend on situation. … I’m not just gonna continue to add years to add years. … I’m not ruling anything out, but it’s gonna have to be the right situation for me and my family.
“Nothing really felt right through free agency, and through that, I had a lot of peace with it,” Tannehill continued. “If something comes up down the road — whether that’s training camp, maybe a guy goes down on a team — you never know what’s gonna happen. [But I’m] not waiting on pins and needles for that call.”
One of the best quarterbacks in the league is down, so this feels like a situation in which Tannehill could succeed while the Chargers wait for Herbert to get healthy.
Of course, Tannehill might not like the idea of sitting behind Herbert when he becomes fully healthy. Tannehill might wait for a situation like the one Joe Flacco found with the Cleveland Browns last year.
