Justin Fields, New York Jets quarterback, may just be a mere ‘placeholder’ for the team according to renowned sportswriter Mike Florio. Fields signed a two-year deal with the Jets for $40 million. NFL fans know only too well that such a deal does not exactly scream ‘long-term’ for any team that is looking for a stable roster.
Florio on ‘NFL on NBC’ also remarked that the 26-year-old quarterback might soon be benched this season in exchange for Tyrod Taylor. Fields will be new to the New York Jets this season and last year played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, throwing for 1,106 yards and scoring five touchdowns. Meanwhile, Taylor managed 112 passing yards for the Jets, scoring three touchdowns for the team.
“That two year $40 million contract Justin Fields signed – once upon a time, that’s top of the market. Nowadays, that that says placeholder, and it’s entirely possible it’s Tyrod Taylor who ends up being the quarterback of the Jets at some point this year,” Mike Florio said about Justin Fields on ‘NFL on NBC’.

Justin Fields entered the NFL in 2021 after being selected as the 11th pick in the very first round of the draft by the Chicago Bears, playing with the team until 2023. Fields then moved to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the previous season, and will not be playing for the Jets. On the other side, 35-year-old Tyrod Taylor has plenty more experience, having played in the NFL since 2011 after signing with the Baltimore Ravens.

Justin Fields Position As Starter Confirmed By GM Darren Mougey
Despite Mike Florio’s words about him, Justin Fields was reaffirmed as the team’s starter by New York Jets general manager, Darren Mougey a few days back. At a news meet on Sunday, Mougey went on to confirm Fields’ position as the team’s starting quarterback.
“He is the starter. But Tyrod is going to be on his heels. Tyrod’s a pro’s pro. So really, it’s gonna be a great asset for Justin in the quarterback room. Tyrod’s been around the league for a long time. He knows what it takes to prepare and prep for this league and be ready to play.” Darren Mougey said in the press conference about Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor.

While Justin Fields will be a breath of fresh air for the New York Jets who recently let go of Aaron Rodgers, Tyrod Taylor will be expected to bring his many years of experience to the locker room as per Mougey’s words.
