The Pittsburgh Steelers made major improvements in the quarterback room this offseason by signing free-agent Russell Wilson and trading for Justin Fields.
Wilson is expected to be the starter this season, and Fields is supposed to be the backup and wait his turn since he is still very young and could have many years left under him in the NFL.
Fields is among the smartest and most athletic players in the NFL, so keeping him on the bench behind Wilson and only letting him see the field in special packages would be a waste of his talents. That is why they need to move him to another position this season.
The Pittsburgh Steelers Need To Move Justin Fields To Wide Receiver
It’s no secret that the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiving core is one of the worst in the NFL. If they don’t acquire San Francisco 49ers’ wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, the Steelers will be in trouble with only having George Pickens has a receiver. He’s not even one of the 25 best in the league.
Pittsburgh will have to rely on guys like Van Jefferson, Calvin Austin III, and Roman Wilson as their second wide receiver, and it’s not exactly exciting, but one person who could excite the position is Fields, and moving him to the wide receiver position couldn’t hurt.
Wasting Field’s athleticism would be a mistake. If the Steelers had receiving options other than Pickens, then there would be no point moving Fields to the receiver. But at the moment, they have nobody else who can play the position, and they can’t go this season without adding more help to the room.
