One year ago, Justin Fields was vying with Russell Wilson for the starting role in Pittsburgh. Now, after signing with the New York Jets, he enters 2025 training camp with the job firmly in his hands—and that sense of certainty has already made a noticeable impact on the fifth-year signal-caller.

“I think you don’t have to worry about as much, last year, like I said, it was kind of in a weird position, but I think, you don’t have to do as much thinking and you kind of just know where you are and focus on getting better, focus on leading the team each and every day, so it’s just not as much other stuff going around, so it’s good,” Fields shared his thoughts following his first training camp session with the Jets on Wednesday.

The Jets brought in Fields on a two-year, $40 million contract this offseason. While the deal itself didn’t promise him the starting role, the Jets’ decisions made it clear. They cut ties with Aaron Rodgers after signing Fields and chose not to draft a quarterback in 2025.

With just $30 million guaranteed in his deal, the Jets can cut ties with Fields after the 2025 season if needed. Still, New York remains committed to giving the 26-year-old quarterback a real shot to prove himself without anyone waiting in the wings to take his place.

The Jets have shown strong belief in the former first-rounder. New head coach Aaron Glenn is convinced Fields is ready to take the next step and break out this season.

New York heads into training camp with only 36-year-old backup Tyrod Taylor, undrafted rookie Brady Cook, and former UFL quarterback Adrian Martinez behind Fields. Right or wrong, the Jets chose to avoid any quarterback competition, giving Fields full control of the offense for at least this season.

Thursday morning brought a sudden shift to the Jets’ season as Fields had to be carted off the field after injuring his leg during practice. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Fields dislocated a toe when another player stepped on his foot. While tests ruled out a fracture and confirmed it wasn’t the big toe, doctors are still evaluating how serious the injury is.

The Jets are set to open their preseason against the Green Bay Packers on August 9, but it’s still unclear if Justin Fields will be ready in time. His dislocated toe is still being evaluated, and the team will likely proceed with caution before putting him back on the field.
