Buccaneers has a new addition to the receiving group. Earlier today they signed Julio Jones, former Atlanta Falcons star wide out. Julio also caught passes for the Tennessee Titans untill being released after last season. Here we will look at why Julio isn’t good with the Buccaneers.
Crowded receiving group
The Buccaneers recieving room is stacked already. Consisting of Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Russell Gage, Tyler Johnson, Breshad Periman, Scotty Miller, and now Jones. Tampa already had one of the best receiving group in the league. The only way this sign would make since is because Godwin suffered a torn ACL last season.
Chris Godwin injury update
Chris Godwin is cleared for training camp. Coach’s said he is expected to play week one against Dallas. The Godwin missing games scenario is not relevant anymore. So if Julio was to get a considerable amount of targets then it would be taking away from another great receiver. Unless there’s a long injury time for one of them there wasn’t a need at receiver.
Latest injuries and down seasons
Julio has had a bad two seasons because of injuries. Also his future production is in question now. So this isn’t the best scenario for him either. If he doesn’t beat out at least Gage then he will spend the season coming off the bench, and not getting a lot of targets. He is signed to a one year, let’s see, deal. If Julio fails to make an impact this season and is let go it could really hurt his value.
Teams that are better fits
He would’ve been a lot better off going to a less crowded receiving team. Somewhere that he definitely would’ve been either the number two or three receiver. That way he could have given himself a great chance at having a comeback season. Which would have raised his value tremendously and gotten his confidence back up. Some examples would’ve been the Colts with former quarterback Matt Ryan. He already has chemistry with Ryan and could’ve been a third receiving option. Some other teams I believe was a better fit is the Panthers, or the packers.
The only other scenario is if Julio Jones is close to retiring and looking to win a Superbowl. The theory being to join a team that’s a contender so you got a chance at winning a championship before you retire. I’ll bring more news as it comes up but for now check out some of these articles.
