Jonathan Gannon was named the new head coach of the Arizona Cardinals on February 14. Jonathan Gannon was hired after the Philidelphia Eagles lost the Chiefs 38-35 in the Superbowl. The hire makes Gannonthe 43rd coach in Arizona Cardinals history. Jonathan Gannon brings years of defensive experience that can help the Arizona Cardinals.

    Jonathan Gannon’s Defensive Success

Jonathan Gannon is a defensive coach at heart. Gannon has had a lot of success in the NFL and most recently  coached a strong Eagle’s defense. The Eagles defense recorded 70 sacks and had four players with 10 plus sacks. Gannon’s defense complimented Philly’s potent offense. Gannon’s defense was number 1 against the pass(179.8 yards per game). Addittionaly, the Eagles recorded 27 takeaways and 17 interceptions.

The Cardinal’s defense ranked 21 in the NFL during the 2022 season. Arizona’s defense allowed 348.9 yards per game and allowed 26 points per game. Arizona’s defense was inconsistent in 2022 and didn’t live up to their standard. Jonathan Gannon can help the Cardinals defense improve and become one of the best in the NFL. Gannon has talent to work with including two-time All-Pro Buddha Baker, Isaiah Simmons, Zaven Collins, Marco Wilson, and Byron Murphy. Gannon can install his defensive scheme and get the best out of his defensive players.

    A Change in Arizona

Arizona needed a change at the coaching position after firing Kliff Kingsbury. Former General Manager Steve Kiem and Owner Michael Bidwill drafted and acquired a lot of talented players. Unfortanetly, Arizona hasn’t experienced successful seasons. Jonathan Gannon will be required to turn things around in the desert. Gannon is coming off of a Superbowl appearance and helped the Eagles secure the number one seed in the NFC. Gannon knows what it takes to win and how to get to the Superbowl. Gannon has the ability to change the culture in Arizona and build a winning team.
