Jon Gruden, the former Buccaneers and former Raiders head coach has landed a job at Barstool Sports on a multi-year deal, a significant return to sports media. Barstool’s president, Dave Portnoy, announced Gruden’s hiring by sharing a video of the coach breaking down his iconic “Spider Y 2 Banana” play for Barstool employees, showing just how passionate the coach still is for the game.

Jon Gruden’s Controversial Past
It has been two years since Gruden resigned from the Raiders over emails that came out as part of an investigation into the Washington Redskins’ workplace culture. The emails showed offensive language and ultimately cost him his head coaching position. Gruden, in response, sued the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell for selectively leaking the emails to remove him. The suit is still on going, and could keep Gruden from being recruited by another NFL team in the future.
Although Gruden’s position at Barstool is still unclear, coming back to a media platform that is quite unconventional in their approach may be a strategy to rebuild his image. Barstool’s over-the-top protesters and at times polarizing points of view are lined up with Gruden’s blunt demeanor, making them perfect partners.

Gruden’s online presence has also grown strongly of late, with the legendary coach featuring play breakdowns and game insights via TikTok and YouTube channels. The Barstool deal and his media activity could suggest that he wants to keep his foot in the football world as he prepares for his potential comeback to the NFL.
Former Jets QB Boomer Esiason has suggested Gruden’s return to an NFL sideline might not be too far off. Gruden reportedly is looking to make a comeback, and teams are reportedly interested in him once his legal matters are sorted first. For now, Barstool Sports has provided a megaphone for him to reconnect with fans, showcase his football knowledge and keep his NFL aspirations alive.
