A video from Saturday’s game between Texas A&M and South Carolina went viral after South Carolina wide receiver Nyck Harbor jogged into the tunnel holding his leg. The 80-yard touchdown had given the Gamecocks a late second-quarter lead.

As Harbor moved toward the field with three teammates, a Texas A&M officer bumped him and another player. The officer then turned and angrily shouted at Harbor, who glanced back in confusion before continuing toward the field.
Texas A&M immediately addressed the incident. The school announced the officer was relieved of gameday duties. Head coach Shane Beamer expressed gratitude for the swift response.

“They do a great job and are first class people, so appreciate them handling that the right way and sending him home,” Beamer said.
Johnny Manziel, attending the game, offered his perspective on the Nightcap podcast with Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson. He described frustration with the first half of the game but acknowledged the officer’s behavior was inappropriate.
“He sought it out for sure,” Manziel said. “And to be honest, I’ve had my tiffs with the state troopers and the city police… But that today, what we saw, was wrong for sure. And I think A&M did handle it the right way.”
Manziel added a controversial comment, recalling his own college days. “Around here in these parts, partner, we protect this house. We paid a lot of money for this house. Get out of my tunnel, boy! Get back on the field. So, he gave him a lil something, let him know what’s up,” he said.
Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson also weighed in on the situation. They noted that players kept their composure and avoided escalating the confrontation.
Johnson suggested a more forceful response could have been avoided, calling the officer’s actions “unnecessary.”
Johnny Manziel criticized for calling officer’s actions a small gesture during athlete confrontation
Manziel referred to the body-check and confrontation as a “lil something” and a “small gesture” that was blown up because “it’s on TV and recorded and blasted everywhere”.
Critics argued this minimized a serious issue involving a law enforcement officer using physical force against a player.
Observers, including some media outlets, highlighted the racist and inappropriate use of authority by the trooper against a young Black athlete.
The criticism pointed out that Manziel’s defense of the officer failed to acknowledge this power dynamic.
Critics took issue with Manziel’s casual tone and attempts to make light of the situation on the podcast. He joked about what he would have done in a similar situation, which some found insensitive given the context.
A Chron.com opinion piece explicitly stated that Manziel’s comparison of his past issues with law enforcement to the trooper’s actions was a “false equivalence,” as the South Carolina player was not breaking any rules.
During his podcast appearance, Manziel did eventually agree that what the trooper did was “unnecessary and wrong” and praised Texas A&M for handling the incident appropriately by sending the trooper home.
He also mentioned his own past “tiffs” with law enforcement around the College Station area but maintained that most local officers do a good job.
