There are a lot of expectations on quarterback John Mateer and the Oklahoma Sooners for the 2025 season.
The Oklahoma Sooners have a history of winning the Heisman Trophy as they are tied with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Ohio State Buckeyes for second place with seven Heismans. However, one college football analyst believes they can break that tie this season with quarterback John Mateer winning the most prestigious individual award in college football.
Let’s take a closer look at who believes this and what we should expect out of the transfer going forward.
John Mateer Winning the Heisman Trophy This Season?

On Monday’s SEC Now, SEC Network’s Chris Doering proclaimed that incoming transfer quarterback John Mateer will win the 2025 Heisman Trophy.
“I’m all in on him. I think this guy is going to be the SEC Player of the Year and I also think he’s going to win the Heisman Trophy. … I’m high on him for a number of different reasons. He’s got athletic ability, he’s comfortable in the offense that he’s already been running with Ben Arbuckle as the two come over together from Washington State. But I look at his arm strength and his ability to move outside the pocket and make plays when things break down.”
John Mateer had a strong season for the Washington State Huskies last season in his first season as a college starting quarterback. He completed 224 of 347 (64.6%) of his passes for 3,139 yards with 29 passing touchdowns to seven interceptions. Mateer was also a massive threat with his legs as he posted 178 rushing attempts for 826 yards (4.6 yards per carry) with 15 rushing touchdowns.
The Oklahoma Sooners are in a tough position, and the jump in competition could make things difficult in a loaded Southeastern Conference so it will be interesting to see how he does.
