Joe Thuney Maintains Elite Guard Play After Trade to Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears acquired one of the NFL’s most consistent offensive linemen when they traded a 2026 fourth-round pick to the Kansas City Chiefs for left guard Joe Thuney.

Through 10 weeks, the veteran has validated that investment by maintaining the elite production that earned him back-to-back first-team All-Pro selections.

Thuney currently leads all guards with a 98.2 percent pass block win rate. The number matches his league-leading mark from the 2024 season.

His ability to protect the quarterback has remained unchanged despite switching organizations and adjusting to new blocking schemes.

The trade represented a salary cap decision by Kansas City rather than concerns about declining performance.

Thuney posted an 87.7 percent pass block win rate when forced to play left tackle late in 2024. That figure still led the league among players at that position during that stretch.

His run blocking has actually improved in his new surroundings. Thuney ranks 8th among guards with a 76.2 percent run block win rate this season.

That number exceeds the 71.4 percent he recorded during his final campaign with the Chiefs.

The Bears secured a proven asset who requires no development or adjustment period. Thuney has delivered the same caliber of play that made him one of the league’s premier interior linemen over the past 2 seasons.

His seamless transition has provided Chicago with immediate stability along the offensive line.

At 35 years old, Thuney shows no signs of age-related decline. His technique and football intelligence continue to neutralize pass rushers consistently.

The combination of elite pass protection and improved run blocking makes him a complete player at the position.

Joe Thuney’s Proven Track Record of Consistency

Thuney’s career demonstrates remarkable durability and sustained excellence at the guard position. He started 16 or more games in 8 consecutive seasons before joining Chicago.

That level of availability has been as valuable as his technical proficiency.

His ability to maintain identical pass block win rate numbers across 2 consecutive seasons with different teams is extremely rare.

Most players experience some statistical fluctuation when changing offensive systems and coaching staffs. Thuney’s production suggests his fundamentals transcend scheme.

The Bears identified a low-risk acquisition that addressed a critical need without surrendering premium draft capital.

A single fourth-round selection represents minimal investment for a player still performing at an All-Pro level. Chicago’s front office capitalized on Kansas City’s salary cap constraints to upgrade their offensive line protection.
