College football fans had strong reactions to a decision President Joe Biden made involving a former Miami Hurricanes booster on Friday.
Per The Athletic‘s Matt Baker, Biden commuted the sentences of nearly 1,500 people this week. Former Miami booster Nevin Shapiro was one of them.
“Shapiro was one of 1,499 people convicted of non-violent crimes whose sentences were commuted Thursday by Biden (another 39 were pardoned),” Baker wrote. “In 2011, Shapiro was sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to one count of securities fraud and another count of money laundering — charges that stemmed from a $930 million Ponzi scheme.”
Nevin Shapiro is well-known in Miami

Shapiro is well known to Hurricanes fans for admitting to Yahoo Sports that he essentially ran the Miami football program like an NFL team, spending lavish sums of money on players and giving them prohibited benefits (like prostitutes and strippers). The NCAA would punish Miami because of Shapiro’s actions.
College football fans react to the pardon

College football fans had strong reactions to Biden pardoning Shapiro this week.
“This doesn’t make much sense. Like at all,” wrote a fan.
“Literally pardoning anyone,” posted another.
“Biden is a Cane baby,” suggested a fan.
