With the Democrats suffering a crushing defeat in the 2024 elections—leading to Donald Trump’s dramatic return to the White House—Stephen A. Smith believes things could’ve gone differently had President Joe Biden stepped aside and allowed Kamala Harris to run.
On Friday’s episode of The Stephen A. Smith Show, the outspoken analyst and political commentator didn’t hold back, saying Biden’s decision to seek re-election cost the Democrats big.
“If you had kept your word about being a transitional president and you had made it very clear early that you would’ve only served one term, it would’ve paved the way for her to run for the office herself and campaign with ample time to do so,” Smith said, reacting to Biden’s recent appearance on ABC’s The View.
He continued, “If you say she is, what you say she is. That she is qualified to be the president of the United States of America, you could’ve helped her. But you didn’t.”
Smith’s point was clear: had Joe Biden exited early and thrown his full support behind Harris, the Democrats might still be in the White House.
Stephen A. Smith blames the Bidens for leading the Democrats to lose
Stephen A. Smith didn’t just stop at Joe Biden—he also called out First Lady Jill Biden for playing a role, however indirectly, in what he called the Democrats’ downfall.
On his Friday broadcast, Smith said both Bidens mishandled the campaign and failed to prepare for a competitive 2024 race.
“With Jill Biden, I’m not going to blame her so much, she was standing by her husband,” he said. “So when he went on the stage June 27th for debate and completely looked inept, out of sync, and everything in between, it was you (Joe) that walked out of that stage minutes later and said you want to thank him and applaud him for doing an outstanding job. And then you go on The View and admit it was a flatout lie.”
Smith also recalled Biden’s 2020 promise to be a “transitional president.”
“You didn’t want to surrender your power,” he said. “The Democrats won the midterms and you were feeling yourself.”
According to Smith, the Bidens clung to influence rather than clearing the way for a new generation—leaving the party in ruins.
