It’s only halftime in this 42-0 throbbing of 0-2 Hawaii, but it should be clear by now who the true starting quarterback should be for the 2022 Michigan Wolverines.
Assuming JJ does not play the second half (and he shouldn’t), JJ McCarthy has done nothing to convince people that anyone other than himself should be running the offense. JJ threw one incomplete pass in the first quarter, a drop by Ronnie Bell. He’s 11 for 12 for 229 yards and three touchdowns. All in the first half.
Granted his performance comes against Hawaii, a team that came into today’s contest with blowout losses to Vanderbilt and Western Kentucky. But at the end of the day, it came as an opportunity for McCarthy to prove himself to be the starter, and he did not back away from the challenge.
No disrespect to McNamara, but the offense appears to run much smoother with McCarthy under center. McCarthy is able to make plays happen that McNamara wouldn’t be able to. And that plays the key difference in determining the starting quarterback.
It’s hard to see a guy like McNamara look so defeated, but Harbaugh is entrusted to make the decisions that are most beneficial to the football team. And that decision is JJ.
At the very least McNamara leaves behind quite the legacy at the university. He lead the team to a long-awaited victory over Ohio State, a Big Ten championship, and the team’s first ever appearance in the College Football Playoff. None of those accomplishments will ever be forgotten.
But at the end of the day, the switch to JJ is going to be made in the best interest of the team. The main goal is to win games, and Harbaugh, like most people, see McCarthy best suited to accomplish that goal.
As of this writing, Michigan leads 42-0 and its about to become even worse in the second half.
Michigan will take on UCONN next Saturday at Michigan Stadium. The game will begin at 12:00 PM and be televised on ABC.
