Jimmy Garoppolo looks to be returning back to the gridiron by mid-August after suffering a shoulder injury against the Dallas Cowboys last season. What does this mean for Trey Lance and his chance to become QB-1 next season?
Jimmy G, Stay or Nay?
Jimmy started his professional career with the New England Patriots in 2014 as Tom Brady’s back up. Although, Tom Brady dominated any time he had the ball, Jimmy was always watching the master at work. Since Brady was always on the field, there was very little time for Jimmy to show what he has to offer, so when he went to the 49ers he only had one choice which was to get better than he was before.
Jimmy was able to shine in gold at Levi’s Stadium, and almost won gold at Super Bowl LIV. There is no doubt that Jimmy has gotten better since his debut for the Niners, or so it seems. Garoppolo’s passing and rushing has gotten significantly better, but a key skill has gotten worse. Garoppolo seems to have an issue with holding on to the ball. Last season, he had 8 fumbles which was twice more than in 2018 and is only getting worse by the year.
Bay Area for ‘Trey Area’?
The San Francisco 49er fans didn’t see much of Trey Lance in the past season and that’s mostly because he was Garoppolo’s secondary. However, ‘Niner Gang’ took a liking to him very quickly and even gave him a nickname, ‘Trey Area’. There is only one thing wrong with this, football isn’t a ‘best nickname’ contest. Where talent lacks, true skills have to shine.
